Nature lovers, trekkers… Pampadum Shola is calling
Vacations, weekends. Sleeping at home or taking a ride round the city is not all you can do. A quick trip close to nature that includes trekking and makes you feel alive. Pampadum Shola national park in Munnar would be the best choice for any short holiday.
Pampadum Shola is the smallest national park in Kerala. It comes under Munnar Wildlife Division of the Kerala forests and wildlife department. Kerala government declared it as a national park in December 2003. This park is only 35 km away from Munnar.
The climate here is cold and always filled with fog round the year, yet, the tourist season is generally from April to September. The climate will be extremely cold in the months of December and January with the temperature reaching 6 degrees.
The park houses a variety of flora and fauna, including leopards and wild dogs. But the main attraction here are the gaur herds. They will always be moving as a family with a father, mother and a baby.
Many a times, the tourists coming here get a glimpse of them grazing through the meadows. The visitors could watch them at a safer distance. The forest department has also arranged enough facilities to accommodate tourists who wish to stay overnight and enjoy the park.
There is one amenity center and two log houses for the tourist accommodation. The amenity center houses about 15 tourists at a time while the log houses can accommodate 2 people each. The rate of accommodation at the amenity center is Rs 500 per head for a single day while at log house it is Rs 4500 for a single day.
Food would not be provided here. The tourists have to depend on the nearby town of Vattavada for food. Vattavada is 7km from here but it would be worth the travel as you could enjoy the taste of Tamil style regional cuisine.
Another important regulation at Pampadum Shola is about smoking and drinking, which is completely prohibited here. Also you cannot take plastic with you, be it water bottles or plastic carry bags. Plastic in general is not allowed.
The forest department also arranges trekking inside the forest. In order to be part of this, you would have to take permission and pay for it. Then the forest department would avail a guide for you.
Well, it is a fact that those who have visited once in their life would never forget the ambience and atmosphere that Pampadum Shola provides. This would always tempt you to come back again. Like someone has said, the forest is calling… Pampadum Shola is calling…
