Idukumpara waterfalls adds beauty to Sankhili forest in Kollam
Palode (Kollam): The mesmerising beauty of the Idukumpara waterfalls along with rare fauna and flora provides a rejuvenating scenary for the nature lovers here at the Sankhili forest.
The waterfalls and Sankhili forest are included in the forest department’s new Idukumpara tourism project. As it was under protected forest reserves, tourists were not allowed here until now. The project will commence next month.
The way to Sankhili and Idukumpara tourist spots start from Madathara – Vengola checkpost. It comes under the Kulathupuzha forest range in Kollam district. It takes a 14-km trek to reach Idukumpara Waterfalls. It is recommended to go by foot. The forest department also provides jeeps for travel. There is a camp for resting when you reach Sankhili through Vengola, Pottomav, Sasthamnada, Muppathadam and Anjanakoppam.
The entrance to the Sankhili forest begins at Arippa, where the first base camp is situated. Cross a fresh water swamp called Karinkurinjipacha where mangroves stand up on their stilts, breathing in air, Sankhili awaits us with her mysterious charm. Kalladayaar flows by, lending her glean and sheen, adding to the musical revelry of the forest. The Ponmudiyaar river brings in the cold chill of Ponmudi and joins the Kalladayaar en route, so does the Vellymalayaar, gurgling her way past the rocks.
The camp is filled with the sounds of nature, the elephants trumpet, chirping of crickets and twittering of the birds. At the camp, you will get light food, can take rest and a bath in the clear waters of the Sankhili river. Passing through the thick forests, watching the beautiful butterflies most often, the trek to Idukumpara waterfalls is an adventure in itself.
The Idukumpara waterfalls lies in five layers, it is beauty that catches the beholder’s eyes at the first sight itself. Age-old arbours and surrounded by waters, the waterfall is about 80 ft high. A bath in these waters would take away any fragility caused by walking.
The mountains, waterfalls, greenery, thick forests, varied wildlife, cool and refreshing air makes this travel alluring to the visitors.
