Kodanchery: Accidents continue to happen in Iruvazhinjipuzha Pathangayam as the visitors gets into the water without proper training and supervision.
Three students died in water accidents in the area. Most people come to this place to take a dip in the cool waters as the scorching heat increases day by day. People come from different parts of the district as well as various places in nearby Malappuram district. Localites claim that approximately 500 people visit the place each day.
Localites state that most of the water accidents reported in the area were caused by hidden caves and whirlpools which cannot be spotted from land. It is commonly observed that people who enter the water to swim often slip and fall into these caves or get trapped in the whirlpools. There are plenty of small and big caves present in the river.
Videography of people jumping from the cliffs is a common sight in the area. Plenty of people who come to this place for swimming return with injuries and bruises. Even though so many people visit this place each day, there is no authority to supervise them or restrict their entry.
For a long time, residents of the area have been requesting officials to appoint a guard and specify visiting time. This would help monitor the area and reduce water accidents. Localites have alleged negligence from higher authorities towards this issue.
The localites also make sure to warn people who don’t know swimming not to enter the water. But sadly, nobody listens to them. With the summer heating up, more visitors are expected in this region in the coming days. More accidents are bound to happen if supervision is not provided in the area.
The new media has played a major role in popularizing Iruvazhinjipuzha Pathangayam which is located in Kodanchery village panchayat. People are posting pictures from inside the cliffs as well as videos of people jumping off the cliffs. Majority of the people coming here are students from Malappuram district. The three persons who died in accidents in the area this year were students from Malappuram district.
