Govt to protect houseboat sector; tourism dept launches new project
Thiruvananthapuram: The state government has initiated measures to retrieve the houseboat sector that went in deep loss amid Covid pandemic. The Department of Tourism launched a one-time financial aid scheme to help the sector. Tourism Minister Kadakampaly Surendran took to Facebook to inform about the initiative.
The financial aid will be provided as maintenance grant for the houseboats servicing in Kerala. The aid is classified into three based on rooms available on the boats – Rs 80,000, Rs 1 lakh and Rs 1.25 lakh.
The application for receiving the grant should be submitted before November 30. The scheme is expected to be beneficial to around 1,000 houseboats in the state with valid registration under Department of Ports. Government evaluates an expense of Rs 10 crore for this.
Earlier the Tourism Department had announced a loan scheme of Rs 455 crore for entrepreneurs and employee in tourism sector.
