Cruise tourism season begins in Kochi
Mattancherry: The first ship arrived in Kochi kickstarting the cruise tourism season in Kerala. The ship ‘Boudicca’ reached the Kochi coast on Sunday carrying 469 passengers. The tourists who came by ship were welcomed by band accompaniment at the Ernakulam wharf.
Special programmes to introduce the artforms of Kerala were also arranged at the wharf. Many stalls were put up exhibiting handicrafts and antique items, also for sale.
The reception was organized by the tourism department. Fully air-conditioned tents were also set up at the wharf. As the ship was too big, it was anchored at Ernakulam wharf. The port trust officials said that more facilities will be enabled at the wharf for cruise ships.
In the last crusie season, 32 ships arrived in Kochi. This year more than 50 ships are expected. In India, most number of cruise ships arrive in Kochi.
The tourists who arrived on ‘Boudicca’ were taken to Fort Kochi, Mattancherry, Alappuzha and Kumarakom for sightseeing on Sunday. The ship will return on Monday night.
