Vagamon Adventure Park is as ugly and dilapidated as it can get
Vagamon (Idukki): It has been eight months since the close down of the adventure park constructed on land owned by the state tourism department at the scenic village of Kolahalamedu. The park which began functioning in 2017, was a popular tourist spot among adventure seekers providing experiences like paragliding.
After 12 tourists were injured when the Burma Bridge, an adventure rope bridge gave way at the adventure park, the state tourism department has temporarily closed down the park for the public to avoid similar mishaps in future. The park, built near the Vagamon Suicide Point was to remain closed until the ongoing construction activities are completed.
Hundreds of tourists had visited the park daily until then. However, it is still not opened though the construction of the adventure park is complete.
According to District Tourism Promotion Council authorities the crisis is due to non –issue of building number by the panchayat.
DTPC had constructed the adventure park worth Rs 95 crore as part of the Pathanamthitta – Gavi – Vagamon – Thekkadi eco-tourism circuit. Paragliding, rope way, rope cycling, bungee jumping, shooting roads, amphitheatre, tourist felicitation centre, high quality pedestrian pathways, cafeteria and rain sheds have been constructed in the 100-acre land. After opening it for the public for two months, it was shut down resulting in huge loss for tourism department.
Now, for the park to be opened for public, maintenance works are to be accrued out again. Doors and windows of most of the buildings are damaged. The roofs made of poly carbonated sheets are also damaged. Many had earlier itself criticised the unscientific roofing made of poly carbonated sheets in place where abundant rains are experienced. Strong winds have blown away most of the sheets. Rain sheds now serve as cattle sheds.
DTPC Secretary Jayan P Vijayan said that the construction company had completed the works and handed it over to DTPC. All the leasing works were also completed. The delay in opening is because of the delay caused by Elappara panchayat in granting building number.
Meanwhile, Elappara panchayat secretary C Shiju Kumar said that building numbers were issued to some of the buildings. The flaws in the online application has resulted in the delay. Issue has been brought to the attention of the Collector. Applications are being examined. Further procedures will be completed in coming days.
