Scientists discover one more subterranean snakehead `Mahabali' from Kerala
Kochi: One more species of snakehead fish has been discovered from Kerala. The fish locally known as ‘varaal’ was found by scientists from National Bureau of Fish Genetics Resources (NBFGR) in Kochi.
The newly discovered fish has a narrow long body in red colour. It was found from a well on the property of Arun Viswanath in Thiruvalla. In further study, it was found that this particular fish was the second species of subterranean snakehead fish in the world.
The research team headed by Rahul G Kumar named the fish as ‘Aenigmachanna Mahabali’.
Earlier, a similar kind of fish was discovered from Malappuram. Until now, 250 species of subterranean fish were discovered in the world. Among this, seven were discovered from Kerala.
