Rare species of 'painted bat' spotted in Thrissur
Pullur (Thrissur): A rare species of bat was found in Anuruli here the other day. The small sized bat with orange and black colour was found from the house of Anuruli native Dileep. The bat is commonly called painted bat and its scientific name is Kerivoula picta.
Painted bats are often found in dry lands and tree holes. The body and tail are of the same size. It weighs about 5 grams only. The bat that has 38 teeth feeds on insects and worms.
Wildlife conservator Shabeer Mapranam said that though painted bats are seen in various Asian countries, they are rarely spotted in Kerala. They freed the bat at the place where it was spotted first.
