Manilal’s contributions to Botany not properly valued by Keralites: Speaker
Kozhikode: Kerala Assembly Speaker P Sreeramakrishnan said that the contributions of Dr K S Manilal who translated the old Latin reference book 'Hortus Malabaricus' have not been properly appreciated by the Malayalis. He was speaking after honouring Manilal with the Jaivajagratha Award instituted by the organisation ‘Samatha’.
The award was handed over at a ceremony chaired by Mayor Thottathil Raveendran at Manilal’s residence in Jawahar Nagar, Kozhikode. Dr Manilal, who was a Professor of Botany in the university of Calicut, took 50 long years to translate Hortus Malabaricus into English and Malayalam.
The English edition of the Hortus Malabaricus was published in 2003 and Malayalam edition in 2008 by Kerala University. For this venture, he learned Latin language. In 2012, the Dutch Government had honoured Dr Manilal with their civilian honour ‘Officer in the Order of Orange Nassau’.
Noted historian Dr MGS Narayanan, environmentalist Dr A Achuthan, cardiologist Dr K Sugatahan, Botanist P V Madhusoodanan and others attended the ceremony. Dr Manilal is presently under rest following a stroke.
