Palakkad municipal stadium turns into dump yard covered with weeds
Palakkad: Sports experts once valued the Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium in Palakkad as one of the best grounds for conducting games. However, the stadium is now a dumb yard and sometimes a venue used for trade fares.
It was once the venue for state level football matches and sports meets. Constructed 34 years back, it never witnessed any maintenance. The stadium is an evidence of the negligence shown towards sports.
For years, no sports events have been conducted here. District league football that was scheduled here, was also changed to elsewhere from the municipal stadium.
The stadium has turned into a dump yard covered with weeds. Stray dogs roam here as food waste is dumped here.
The state sports council had earlier said that it will maintain the stadium if handed over to them. However, the municipality was not willing for that move.
Though there is a detailed plan for municipality to renovate the stadium with 400-meter synthetic track and a football ground at the middle, it has not taken a single step to materialize the project. The new project would raise the stadium to an international level with a gallery capacity of 50,000.
However, there is no fund to renovate the stadium according to the plan. Estimated budget of the project is Rs 13 crore. The municipality alone cannot find the huge amount. An attempt to find special fund is underway. Steps to clean the stadium will be taken, said Raghuraman, municipal secretary.
