National Senior Athletics Championship: Kerala crowned overall champion
Lucknow: When the curtain was downed for the 59th National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championship here on Friday, Kerala was crowed as the overall champions of the meet. Kerala team reached the first place with 159 points in both men and women’s category. On the last day of the meet, the Malayalee squad had bagged 10 golds, 12 silvers and three bronze medals.
On Friday, the last day of the meet, Kerala won seven medals including gold medal by Sree Shankar in men’s long jump. Haryana’s Anjali who recorded a better time (51.53 seconds) in the women’s 400 metre race became the best athlete of the meet. However, no one qualified for the world athletic meet from the national meet here.
On the last day, Maymon Paulose in Men’s 110 metre hurdles (14.00 seconds), P U Chitra in women’s 1500 metre race (4 minutes 22.03 seconds) and Marina George in heptathlon won silver medals. Men and women’s team in 4x400 metre relay and women’s team in 4x100 metre relay won bronze medals.
P U Chitra who came first in women’s 800 metre race had to comply with silver in 1500 metre race. However, her qualification for world meet is not shaken. P U Chitra’s entry to the world meet might be challenged if only an athlete put up a good show in the meet scheduled to be held in Germany on September 1. Qualification mark for the 1,500 metre race in world meet is 4.06.50 minutes.
