Careless again: Student injured as hammer snaps during athletic meet in Kozhikode
Kozhikode: A student was injured after a hammer he was throwing snapped during the Revenue District Athletic Meet here on Friday.
He was identified as Muhamamad Nishan, a native of Arakkinar and a class 8 student of Ramakrishna Mission School in Meenchanda. Nishan was competing in the 5 kg category of the hammer throw event. However, the officials had brought a hammer that weighed 7.5 kg.
While Nishan was throwing the hammer, its steel cable snapped and he fell. Nishan sustained injuries on two fingers on his left arm. Nishan was in pain and his fingers swelled up. He was taken to the Kozhikode medical college hospital for treatment. Doctors said Nishan had sustained a fracture to his finger but the injuries were not serious.
Following the accident, the event was temporarily stopped. Nishan was supposed to take part in the Javelin throw event later in the day.
Until last year, the students were given hammers weighing 5 kilograms. But this year, the organisers had used hammers weighing 7.5 kg. Nishan had used hammers weighing upto 6 kg during practice. The organisers said they used 7.5 kg hammer as a 5 kg one was not available.
Following the accident, organisers brought in a new hammer that weighed 5 kg and the event continued.
It must be remembered that Apheel Johnson, a Plus One student, had died after a hammer thrown by an athlete accidentally fell on his head during the State Junior Athletic Championship in Pala in October.
