Calicut University to allow transgender students to participate in sports meet
Thenhippalam: The University of Calicut decided to allow transgender students to participate in sports meet. It has been decided to give opportunity to transmen in men's category and transwomen in women's category of events. With this, the University of Calicut has become the first university that formed its sports policy inclusive of transgender people.
The transgender candidates are allowed to participate in events following the protocol of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). As per the AIU protocol, those who are at least 25 years old are allowed to participate in the sports events. Competition in an event will be conducted only if there are at least three candidates in it.
The first participation will be in athletics. Presently, there are only two officially recognised transgender students under the University of Calicut. The decision to include transgender students in sports events was taken considering the request of Riya Ishan, a student of Malappuram Government College and one of the two transgender students under the university.
Pro Vice Chancellor P. Mohan chaired the syndicate committee meeting. Department of Physical Education director Dr. V. P. Sakkeer Hussain, deputy director Dr. K. P. Manoj and joint registrar C. S. Mohanakrishnan attended the meeting.
