At AFI meeting, PT Usha batted for PU Chitra, defeated by North Indian lobby
Kozhikode: Amid outrage over dropping P U Chitra from the Indian squad for the upcoming World Championship, reports are coming out suggesting that the Kerala athlete was ‘sidelined’ by powerful North Indian lobby.
It is learned that P T Usha spoke in favour of Chitra at the selection committee meeting, but was ignored by others. The reason pointed out by committee members for excluding Chitra was that she has been ‘inconsistent’ in her recent performances.
There was also attempt to drop another Malayali athlete R Anu, but Usha’s intervention helped her gain a place in the team.
Earlier, there were rumours that Usha was behind AFI’s move to drop Chitra from the list. However, the minutes of the meeting revealed that Usha had, in fact, supported Chitra as well as other Kerala athletes at the selection committee meeting.
