Alappuzha: The Nehru Trophy boat race has only three days left and the boats are almost ready for the ultimate water sport held annually in Alappuzha

It is usually held every second Saturday in the month of August but this year it was postponed to November 10 due to the devastating floods. The event is conducted in the Punnamada backwaters.

There are 81 boats competing for the title this season. Minister Dr. TA Thomas Isaac said that the first 5 ‘Chundan Vallam’ (snake boats) will be gifted Rs 10 lakh special prize. He said this while addressing the media in Alappuzha.

There will be 25 ‘Chundan Vallam’ attending the event. 20 among them will be participating in the competitions while 5 will be only attending the exhibition race. 51 small boats will be participating in the competitions. The heats will begin at 11 and the final will be from 2 in the afternoon.

The tickets worth Rs 40 lakh have been already sold. The authorities expect to sell more tickets in the coming days. As the event scheduled in August was cancelled, those who booked the tickets then were allowed refund.

Allu Arjun, Kerala Blasters

The Kerala Blasters football team will reach the pavilion this season to watch the boat race. The event will be inaugurated by governor P Sathasivam. Union minister Alphons Kannanthanam will be the chief guest. Telugu actor Allu Arjun, Ministers TM Thomas Isaac, G Sudhakaran will also attend the event.

Everyone to get insurance coverage

The government has enabled insurance coverage to the participants as well as spectators. Around 2000 policemen have been deployed for security. The Punnamada backwaters and surrounding region will be under camera surveillance.

A rescue team including diving experts and scuba divers are also instituted at the event venue. Plastic bottles are strictly restricted. On the event day, more KSRTC buses and boats will operate service to facilitate commuters.

Sub-collector VR Krishna Teja, Alappuzha municipality chairperson Thomas Joseph, DySp PV Baby and Irrigation executive engineer Haran Babu also attended the press conference.
