Thenhipalam: A coach has arrived from Brazil to impart training to Calicut University students in kayaking. Alexandria Maria Pinta, canoeing and kayaking professor at a university in Spain, reached Calicut varsity on Tuesday.

The training started in the pond in the garden on Tuesday evening itself.

It is for the first time in the history of the university that a foreign coach is training the students of Calicut University. The varsity will participate in the kayaking competition in the inter-varsity championship this time, which is also a first.

The Sports Authority of India arranged the coach. So far, 10 boys have been getting training on their own. The new coach has selected eight girls, too.

Prof Pinta's husband is a native of Poland. He was the national canoeing-kayaking coach of Chile in the Rio Olympics.

There are kayaking competitions in 200 m, 500 m, and 1000 m for one participant, two participants, and four.

Practical classes are planned in mornings and evenings and theory classes, at noon. The practice sessions will be expanded to Kadalundi river, said Physical Education Department Assistant Director Dr K P Manoj.
