Indian women's hockey team beat China to win Asia Cup
Kakamigahara (Japan): The Indian women's hockey team won the Asia Cup title after overcoming China 5-4 via a shootout in a nail-biting final here on Sunday.
This is India’s second Asia Cup title and they had won their last continental title in 2004 beating Japan in the final held at New Delhi. With the victory, India have qualified for the next year's World Cup too.
After the 1-1 tie in the regulation time, the game went to shootouts where India clinched the title.
India took the lead through Navjot Kaur in the 25th minute. However, Tiantian Luo returned the goal for China after she successfully converted a penalty corner in the 47th minute.
The score was 4-4 after the first five shots. In the crucial first attempt in the sudden death, India’s Rani Rampal hit the target while China's Liang Meiyu missed giving India a 5-4 win.
The triumph of the Indian women's team follows the Asia Cup victory of the men's side last month.
South Korea secured third place with a 1-0 win over Japan earlier in the day.
