After defeating former World Champion, Thrissur boy Nihal returns `without' trophy
Thrissur: Cap D’agde is a name Nihal Sarin will never be able to forget in his life. It was at Cap D’agde resort in France that Nihal Sarin defeated Anatoly Karpov, who was once the ‘king’ of world chess.
However, Nihal forgot to bring the trophy, that he won from that match, back home. He left it at the place in which he stayed during the tournament. It was only when he opened his bag upon returning to Kerala that he noticed his missing trophy. “I called them and asked them to send the trophy to India” Thrissur native Nihal said with a smile.
Nihal Sarin, who is studying in 10th standard, is the new face of Indian chess. He managed to defeat two former world champions in a span of just 10 days. Along with Karpov, Nihal also defeated former women’s Chess champion from China, Ho Yiffan.
The Chess world considers Nihal’s victory against Karpov as a major milestone. The tournament’s trophy was also named after Anatoly Karpov. Nihal also managed to secure a tie in the two matches of the rapid round. However, Karpov defeated the teenager in the first match of the Blitz round.
In the second match of the Blitz round, Nihal retaliated and secured win. While it took 69 moves for the former world champion to win the first match, Nihal won the second match in 28 moves.
This is what Nihal had to say after returning from the tournament held in England and France.
After the match, there were reports that you could have won the match….?
Yes. I could have. I had an advantage but there was a little bit of tension as I was facing a chess legend. Also, Karpov played with very good defense.
What did Karpov say after the match?
He smiled and said that it was a good match.
What about the match with Ho Yiffan?
There was an advantage in that match also. But in the last match, she seemed to be a bit tensed.
What do you think of your performance in the tournament that was held in UK?
I can’t say that it was very good. The competition was against really good players. It was a great experience.
When is your next tournament?
There is a tournament which will be held in Barcelona, Spain during December. After that there is the world rapid and blitz chess championship. There is another tournament in Netherlands in January.
