Malappuram: Akash S Madhavan and Gokul Das on Saturday departed from Kerala for 2022 BWF Para-Badminton World Championships.

The duo made it to the ambitious tournament after clinching gold medal in the doubles category of Uganda Para Badminton International 2022, through which they improved the ranking from 21 to 16--the qualifying criteria for World Championships.

The tournament is from November 1 to 6 and they will play the first match on November 2. 16 countries will take part in the tournament to be held at Tokyo, Japan.

Akash hails from Malappuram’s Melattur while Gokul Das is from Kozhikode’s Areeparambu.

Meanwhile, the duo said that despite the accolades, finding sponsorship for international tournament remains a challenge.
