ISL: Kerala Blasters off to positive start with 2-1 win over ATK
Kochi: Kerala Blasters held on to win 2-1 against ATK in the opening match of the Indian Super League (ISL) at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium here on Sunday.
Carl McHugh gave ATK the lead in the 6th minute with a brilliant volley from inside the box. Captain Bartholomew Ogbeche brought Blasters level by converting a penalty on the 30th minute mark. He scored a cracker from just inside the box in the 44th minute to give the men in yellow the lead.
There were some close calls and possible controversial decisions, both of them going against the visitors. The first was a penalty claim in the after a clumsy tackle by one of the Kerala Blasters defenders brought down an ATK forward inside the box but the referee was not interested.
Moments later, a defence splitting pass had put one of the ATK forwards through on goal but it was ruled offside. Replays showed that it may well have been the wrong decision.
ATK striker Roy Krishna wasted a good opportunity to equalize after a neat cross from near the touchline found him in space between the Kerala Blasters centrebacks. However, the ATK striker headed wide.
