Goa defeat ATK 2-1 to go top of ISL table
Margao (Goa): FC Goa secured three massive points defeating ATK 2-1 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Saturday.
Goals from Mourtada fall in the 60th minute had put hosts Goa into the lead but visitors ATK equalised through Jobby Justin in the 64th minute. But, Goa reclaimed the lead two minutes later through Ferran Corominas.
The result took Goa to the top of the Indian Super League (ISL) table with 15 points from 8 matches. ATK are second with one point less.
After a pretty sedate first half, the game sprung into life in the second half. A handball near the 60th-minute mark resulted in a free-kick. Brandon Fernandes made full use of it and provided the perfect assist for Mourtada Fall to head home the first goal of the game.
However, ATK struck back within 4 minutes with Jobby Justin who slotted the ball in the back of the net after Goa keeper Mohammad Nawaz parried the ball into his path. Ferran Corominas reinstated Goa’s lead two minutes later. The Spaniard pounced on a cross laid on by Hugo Boumous and rifled the ball in.
Arindam Bhattacharja made a crucial save near the 85th-minute mark to give ATK FC a chance to draw but they could not force in a second equalizer.
However, ATK could count themselves unlucky as Seriton Fernandes should have been sent off in the 55th minute for a late challenge on Michael Soosairaj which sent the ATK man flying in the air. But the referee waved away the protests.
Seriton was shown a yellow card in the 14th minute for bringing down Javier Hernandez with a late challenge from behind. Seriton’s second foul was much worse than the first and Goa scored five minutes after the incident.
The two coaches, Goa’s Sergio Lobera and ATK’s Antonio Lopez Habas were seen having heated discussions after the final whistle. The two managers were separated by coaching staff. Earlier, the referee had booked assistants from both sides.
