David James, Kerala Blasters part ways after dismal season
Kochi: Kerala Blasters FC and coach David James have parted ways following the dismal performance of the team in the fifth season of the Indian Super League. With just nine points from 12 games, the team in yellow are sitting eighth in the ISL table
The former England goal-keeper, who joined the team in January 2018 as Head coach played an instrumental role in the Team’s journey through a crucial juncture during ISL Season 4. He also continued to lead the team during Season 5 of the ISL till December 2018.
Club CEO Varun Tripuraneni said “The club would like to thank David for his efforts towards the team and wishes him all the very best in his career.”
“I’d like to thank the management, players and all staff for their support during my stint with the club. I wish them the very best for the future. The fans here have been amazing and I’d like to thank them too for a memorable experience.” said David James.
Kerala Blasters nosedived to the lower half of the ISL table after defeating ATK in the first match of the 2018-19 season. The team in yellow managed six stalemates and five loses in the following 11 matches.
James, while taking over as manager, had announced that he was trying to create a solid core of youngsters. However, the team’s performances showed that the coach did not have a settled first 11 or a stable formation.
Under James, Blasters showed moments of brilliance but struggled for cohesion and consistency. Defensive fragilities plagued the team in yellow while
The team’s performance was so pathetic that a large number of their fans Manjappada, who called themselves the 12th man, refrained from watching the game at their home turf in Kochi. Last matches even saw irked fans raising banners saying “we deserve better”. In the last match, Blasters had crumbled to a 6-1 defeat against Mumbai City FC.
This is the second consecutive season that Blasters have sacked their coach mid-way through the campaign. Last season, former Manchester United assistant coach Rene Meulensteen was shown the door after a poor start. Unfortunately, David James, the man who replaced Meulensteen, had the same fate.
