Anas Edathodika comes out of retirement
Kochi: Malayali footballer Anas Edathodika is coming back from retirement following a call up from new national team coach Igor Stimac.
Anas had announced his retirement following India’s 1-0 loss to Bahrain at the AFC Asian Cup in January. The move had come as a shock to many.
Stimac has included Anas in the 35-member squad for the Intercontinental Cup scheduled to be held in Ahmedabad in July.
Anas said that the Stimac’s words made him come out of retirement. Anas had represented India 19 times before announcing his retirement. He had formed a great understanding with center back partner Sandesh Jhingan to strengthen the Indian defense.
“The coach has shown his belief in me. Now it’s my turn to respond. He had messaged me stating that I have been included in the squad and asked me to return to the training camp. Now I am waiting to join the team,” said Anas.
The 35-member Indian squad includes three more Malayalis – Sahal Abdul Samad, Ashique Kuruniyan and Jobby Justin.
