Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala secured a morale boosting 21 run victory against Punjab in the Ranji Trophy cricket tournament here on Monday.
Jalaj Saxena’s seven wicket haul helped Kerala bowl out Punjab, who were chasing a target of 146 runs, for 124 runs. Scores - Kerala: 227 & 136, Punjab: 218 & 124. With their first victory of the season, Kerala now has six pints.
Punjab, who were struggling at 89 for 8, tried to mount a comeback with the help of Mayank Markande (23 of 73) and Siddharth Kaul (22of 29). But Nidheesh M. D. dismissed Kaul when the score was 122. Nidheesh had claimed seven wickets in the first innings.
Mayank Markande was the top scorer for Punjab. Kerala bowlers were so dominant that three of the Punjab batsmen returned to the pavilion before they could open their accounts.
In the first innings, Kerala had secured a narrow lead after scoring 227 on the back of Robin Uthappa’s 48 run and Salman Nizar’s 91 run knocks. In response, Punjab were bowled out for 218. Mandeep Singh had scored 71 while Gurkeerat Mann scored 37.
