Ranji Trophy: Gujarat defeats Kerala by 90 runs
Surat (Gujarat): Kerala disappointed in Ranji Trophy cricket tournament yet again after suffering a 90 run defeat to Gujarat here on Friday.
Chasing a target of 268 runs, Kerala were bowled out with only 177 runs on the score board. Gujarat gained two valuable points following the result.
Such was the dominance of Gujarat bowlers that three Kerala batsmen returned to the pavilion with single digits while two others could not even open their account. Sanju Samson, who scored 78 runs from 82 balls, was the only bright spot in the Kerala innings.
For Gujarat, Axar Patel claimed four wickets. C. T. Gaja took three wickets while R. B. Kalaria claimed two. Score: Gujarat – 127 & 210, Kerala – 70 & 117.
After restarting their innings at 26 for no loss, Kerala lost Vishnu Vinod (23 of 26 balls) when the score was 36. Jalaj Saxena returned after scoring 29 runs. Meanwhile, Monish Kareparambil, Robin Uthappa and Sachin Baby returned for 7, 7 and 11 respectively.
In the first innings, Kerala had bowled out Gujarat for 127 but could score only 70 runs in response. In the second innings, Gujarat managed to score 210. Manpreet Juneja (53) and Chintan Gaja (50) scored half centuries.
At one point, Gujarat were 160/9. C T Gaja (50 from 47 balls) helped them cross the 200 mark with the help of S. A. Desai. For Kerala, Basil Thampi took five wickets. Jalaj Saxena claimed three while Sandeep Warrier claimed two wickets.
This was Kerala’s first away match. In the two home Kerala had drawn with Delhi and lost to West Bengal.
