Ranji: Saxena, Rohan guide Kerala to comfortable position
Rohtak: Stellar efforts made by all-rounder Jalaj Saxena and prolific southpaw Rohan Prem saw Kerala taking advantage on the second day of their Ranji Trophy Group B match against Haryana at Chaudhry Bansi Lal Cricket Stadium, Lahli here on Sunday.
After bowling out Haryana for 208 runs in the morning, Kerala ended the day at 203 at the loss of three wickets.
Resuming the second day at 207-9, Haryana innings folded up within three balls when Basil Thampi picked up his second wicket of the match dismissing A H Hooda for naught. Haryana managed to add one more run to the total and ended the first innings at 208. A R Mishra remained unbeaten on 32.
For Kerala, seamer Sandeep Warrier bagged 4-50. Vinod Kumar and Basil Thampi shared two wickets apiece while Saxena and Nidheesh picked one each.
Kerala’s started their reply in a sad note losing opener K B Arun Karthick for 3 in the last ball of second over when scoreboard read 5.
However, co-opener Jalaj Saxena and Rohan Prem brought their experience to full use and their determination saw Kerala recovering from the early jolt and heading to a comfortable position. In the second wicket stand that extended to almost three sessions of the day, the duo added 172 runs to the total helping Kerala to come out of the woods.
Saxena’s hard fought innings of 91 (205 balls, 4x 10) ended in the 77th over of the Kerala innings when he was castled by A R Mishra.
Saxena’s dismissal brought Sanju Samson to the crease. The wicketkeeper batsman played aggressively hitting two fours and a six in his little cameo of 16 runs from as many deliveries.
Both Rohan and Sanju added 21 runs to the total in 6 overs before A K Chahal trapped Sanju in front of wicket.
Night watchman Basil Thampi joined Rohan in the middle and together they saw three more overs. Kerala ended the day at 203-3, trailing Haryana by 5 runs.
At stumps, Rohan is batting on 79 (273 balls, 4x9) whereas Basil Thampi is yet to open his account.
