Ranji: Kerala all-out for 225; Saurashtra 37-0 on Day 1
Thiruvananthapuram: Spinner D A Jadeja’s six wicket haul helped Saurashtra bundle out Kerala for 225 runs in the first innings on the first day of the Ranji Group B encounter at the St'Xavier's KCA Cricket Ground here on Friday. At stumps, Saurashtra reached 37 without any loss and they are trailing by 188 runs.
Kerala captain Sachin Baby, who won the toss, opted batting in the familiar wicket.
Opener Mohammed Azharuddeen and Jalaj Saxena justified his decision by giving a sound start. In the eight over, Mohammed Azharuddeen departed for 16 as the score reached 27. Five overs later, his co-opener Jalaj Saxena (22) joined him in pavilion becoming the first victim of D A Jadeja. Further, seasoned campaigners Rohan Prem and Sanju V Samson steadied the innings making an 82-run stand for the third wicket.
Jadeja trapped Rohan (29) in front of the wicket in the 36th over and when the score reached 148, Sanju (68 off 104 balls; 6x4, 3x6) lost his stumps to Unadkat. When 10 more runs were added to the total Captain Sachin Baby (15) was caught by barot off Jadeja and the hosts slipped to 158-5.
K B Arun Karthick also failed make an impact and fell for 9.
The resistance shown by Fabid Ahmed (22) and Salman Nizar (28) was the lone highlight of the latter part of Kerala innings and they were eventually folded up for 225 in 78 overs.
D A Jadeja, who bowled 33 overs, bagged 6-112 from 33 overs. Jaydev Unadkat and V M Jivrajani took scalps two each.
Saurashtra made 37 without any loss in the 10 overs before stumps were drawn with Robin Uthappa batting on 20 and Snell S Patel on 16.
The result of the match is crucial for Kerala, which sit in third place in Group B securing 18 points from 4 matches.
Saurashtra are sitting up the top with 23 points from as many matches.
