IPL 13: Mumbai Indians to face Chennai Super Kings as cricket's biggest carnival kick starts
Dubai: The 13th edition of the Indian Premiere League is only a few hours away from kick-off. The inaugural match of the largest franchise cricket tournament in the world will start at 7.30 pm IST at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium, Abu Dhabi on Saturday.
The inaugural match is between the two strongest teams in IPL history. Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians will take on MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings. Fans are excited to see MS Dhoni in the field after almost a year. His last official match was against New Zealand in the 2019 Cricket World Cup. Last month, he announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket.
The reigning champions, Mumbai Indians, had defeated Chennai in last year’s IPL final by just one run.
Mumbai has the most number of IPL titles with four IPL trophies to its name. Mumbai Indians is closely followed by CSK with 3 titles, although they have made to the finals on 8 different occasions.
Unlike in the previous editions of IPL, there will not be a grand opening ceremony this year due to COVID regulations. Although fans are not allowed in the stadium, BCCI President, Sourav Ganguly stated that the IPL governing body is mulling the possibility of filling the stadiums by 30 percent as the tournament progresses.
The tournament which was scheduled to take place in March was shifted to UAE due to the COVID crisis in India. The players will have to remain in a biosecure bubble over the course of the tournament as part of COVID regulations. They cannot interact with anyone outside of the bubble.
