Boxing coach Puthalath Raghavan passes away
Kozhikode: Noted boxing coach Pooladikunnu native Puthalath Raghavan passed away. His disciples had won the first gold medal in boxing for Kerala.
He was active as a sports coach in Friends Cultural Society founded by him.
Apart from being a boxing trainer, Raghavan was a multitalented person who proved his skills as a painting teacher, sculptor, yoga-wrestling instructor and a farmer.
Puthalath Raghavan was the first coach who took initiative to train girls in boxing.
For the last 4 decades, his disciples were active in state boxing championships. National and state boxers M Suman Lal Dharam, K Mridul Lal Dharam, Rakesh Sankar, E Pravitha, P Ratheesh, Ramesh Kumar, Jijeesh and Mubarack Ahammad are some of his disciples.
Interestingly, Raghavan who dedicated his life for sports, trained many students for free.
From sunrise to midnight, he was always found busy with the training sessions on the ground close to his house. He led many sports events in his village.
His sculptures also revealed his passion for boxing as each sculpture featured the boxer with a well-built body.
He also served as an art teacher at Modakkallur AUP school. But within a short period, he resigned from the job.
Raghavan, who remained a bachelor, dedicated all his savings for the development of sports in his village. He also served as state boxing association vice president, district secretary and district sports council executive member.
