Doha: P U Chitra bagged gold medel in the 1500-metre women’s final at the 2019 Asian Athletics Championship being held here in Quatar.
Her winning run was timed at 4 minutes and 14.56 seconds. The gold medal was India’s third in the championship. Chitra, who was sidelined for over three months with a knee injury has proved doubters wrong with her performance.
The runner from Palakkad stayed close to the race leaders throughout the race only to burst forward in the final 300 metres. She pulled clear of all the others just a few strides before the finish line.
Gashaw Tigest of Bahrain, who led the race until the last moment settled for silver with a time of 4:14.81 minutes, just 25 milliseconds behind Chirta.
Chitra had bagged bronze at the Asian Games in Jakarta last year. Incidentally, it was Gashaw who had claimed silver ahead of Chitra back in 2018.
