NorthEast defeats Jamshedpur 2-1, moves up to 5th
NorthEast United FC defeated Jamshedpur FC 2-1 in the Indian Super League (ISL) at the Tilak Maidan Stadium in Vasco in Sunday’s first match.
Goals from Ashutosh Mehta (36th minute) and Deshorn Brown (61st minute) gave NEUFC a 2-0 lead before Peter Hartley pulled one back in the 89th minute.
Owen Coyle had lined up Jamshedpur in a 4-4-1-1 formation while interim coach Khalid Ahmed Jamil deployed NEUFC in a 4-3-3 formation.
The first half belonged to NEUFC who dominated Jamshedpur. Had it not been for a few good saves by goalkeeper TP Rehenesh, the Highlanders could have scored more. Federico Gallego’s corner was emphatically headed in by Ashutosh Mehta in the 36th minute.
A sloppy give away resulted in the second goal just past the hour mark. Isaac Vanmalsawma poorly lost the ball in the midfield under pressure from Luis Machado. He flicked the ball back to Federico Gallego. The midfielder threaded in a beautiful ball between the two centre backs. Deshorn Brown had his sights fixed on the goal and fired the ball past the keeper with ease.
Subhasish Roy was busier in the second half compared to the first. He denied Nerijus Valskis from scoring after a poor goal kick went straight to the Jamshedpur striker in the 72nd minute.
Peter Hartley pulled one goal back from a corner in the 89th minute. However, it was too little too late as NEUFC finally won game after 7 games.
The result moved NorthEast up to 5th in the table with 15 points from 12 matches. Jamshedpur came down to 8th with 13 points from 12 games.
