ISL: Odisha salvage a point against Jamshedpur in 4 goal thriller after Rehenesh red card
An eventful match between Jamshedpur FC and Odisha FC in the Indian Super League ended in a 2-2 draw at the Tilak Maidan Stadium in Vasco on Sunday.
Nerijus Valskis gave Jamshedpur a 2-0 lead in the first half after converting a penalty and pouncing on a defensive error. However, their keeper T. P. Rehenesh was sent off for handling the ball outside the box. Diego Mauricio scored a brace in the 77th and in injury time to salvage a point for Odisha.
Both Jamshedpur and Odisha were looking for their first points of the season after defeats in their opening matches.
Stuart Baxter lined up Odisha in a 4-2-3-1 formation while Owen Coyle deployed Jamshedpur in a 4-3-3 formation.
Jamshedpur were awarded a penalty in the 11th minute after a hand ball by Gaurav Bora inside the box. A cross towards the far post was headed towards goal. It was saved but the ball was not out of danger. As Odisha looked to clear the ball away, it fell to Nerijus Valskis. The striker’s shot was blocked by Gaurav Bora on the line but the defender used his hand. The referee pointed to the spot. Nerijus Valskis stepped up calmly slotted the ball towards the left corner.
It got worse for Odisha as they fell behind 2-0 in the 27th minute after a defensive error. Shubham Sarangi from the left of the box looked to head the ball back towards a defender. However, the right back was unaware about Nerijus Valskis. The Jamshedpur striker intercepted the pass and fired a thunderous shot past the keeper.
Jamshedpur looked totally in control until the 74th minute when their goalkeeper T. P. Rehenesh was given his marching orders.
A long ball towards the Jamshedpur box was falling to an attacker. Rehenesh runs out to clear but he ends up handling it outside his box. There was some confusion but eventually it was confirmed that Rehenesh was outside his area while dealing the ball.
Owen Coyle sacrificed Telem Jackichand Singh to accommodate keeper Pawan Kumar.
But the red card was a turning point in the game as Odisha looked to capitalise. They pulled one back in just three minutes later.
A free kick was hit low towards the near post. The ball hit the post and went towards the right flank. The ball was crossed back into the box and took a few deflections. The ball went towards Shubham Sarangi outside the box. The Odisha defender scuffed his shot but the ball fell to Diego Mauricio. The Odisha striker smashed the ball into the net.
Diego Mauricio scored a sensational goal in injury time. The Odisha striker got the ball on the left hand side of the box. He turned and took a few steps ahead before shifting the ball to his right and then slamming it into the back of the net.
Jamshedpur basically shot themselves in the foot after they looked to be cruising to victory. Odisha made the most of their opportunities to salvage a point from a game that looked beyond them until the last 15 minutes.
