ATK Mohun Bagan beats SC East Bengal 2-0 to win maiden Kolkata derby in ISL
ATK Mohun Bagan won the first Kolkata derby in the history of the Indian Super League (ISL) defeating SC East Bengal 2-0 at the Tilak Maidan Stadium in Vasco on Friday.
Goals from Roy Krishna (49th minute) and Manvir Singh (85th minute) decided the game.
Antonio Lopez Habas lined up ATK Mohun Bagan in his favoured 3-5-2 formation while Robbie Fowler deployed SC East Bengal in a 4-2-3-1 formation.
ATKMB were very slow to get off the blocks and grew into the match only by the end of the first quarter. East Bengal kept their arch rivals at bay and had the better opportunities. However, SCEB have nothing to show for it.
The major incident in the first half was Javier Hernandez’s drilled shot forcing a big save from Debjit Majumder, who pushed the ball out for a corner in the 36th minute.
Apart from that the only two talking points of the half were the two yellow cards. The first one was awarded to Balwant Singh for fouling Javier Hernandez in the 22nd minute while the second one was shown to Jayesh Rane for rash tackle on Matti Steinmann in the 45th minute.
It was a tense and cagey derby but East Bengal will be more satisfied about the first half. ATKMB will need to improve their game in the final third and finishing.
Both teams started the second half without any changes.
Roy Krishna broke the deadlock in the 49th minute. The ball came to the Fijian striker from the right hand side after some good work from Prabir Das. Krishna drilled it into the bottom corner with his left foot from just outside the penalty box.
ATKMB have been defending in a solid 5-3-2 before switching to a 3-5-2 to counter attack. They also pressed SCEB high up the pitch to prevent them from playing out from the back. This caused issues for East Bengal who liked to keep the ball and build play from the back.
Manvir Singh, who came in as a substitute in the 63rd minute doubled ATKMB’s lead 5 minutes before normal time.
The ball was lofted towards Manvir Singh on the right flank, who had acres of space. He galloped forward and got into the box before moving to his left to create some space. Singh then drilled a powerful shot into the back of the net to make it 2-0.
ATKMB is proving that they are a force to be reckoned with. Two wins and 2 clean sheets should make coach Habas very happy. East Bengal coach Fowler will have a few things to look at, particularly finishing.
