Rs 50,000 to families of Covid victims: Kerala Govt releases order
Thiruvananthapuram: Following the same stance of the Union government, the Kerala government issued an order to provide Rs 50,000 to families of Covid-19 victims. The date of distributing ex gratia relief and related guidelines will be disclosed soon.
As per the order, Covid-19 deaths figure in the list for which compensation from state disaster relief fund are to be provided.
Earlier, Supreme Court ordered the Union government to provide compensation for families of Covid victims. Following that National Disaster Management Authority decided to provide Rs 50,000. Based on this only Kerala State Disaster Management Authority issued the new order.
According to the data released by the government, 24,661 individuals have succumbed to Covid-19 in Kerala until September 27. Similarly, around 7,000 deaths which was missed in the period before June need to be included. Meanwhile, as per the Supreme court order, the families of those individuals who succumbed within 30 days after turning positive for Covid-19 and those who died by suicide while they were Covid-19 positive should be given ex gratia relief. Considering all these factors, it is likely that number of people eligible for compensation would be another 15,000.
As per the present estimate, more than Rs 130 crore would be needed to settle the compensation for all. Covid-19 deaths reported since Day one Covid-19 cases reported in India will be considered for the compensation.
