Thiruvananthapuram: Renowned director Priyadarshan on Sunday said that appreciation is quite subjective and there is no movie in the world that everyone likes altogether.

Speaking on ‘Thirkkathayum Kadannu’ at the fourth edition of the Mathrubhumi International Festival of Letters (MBIFL) at Kanakakunnu Palace in Thiruvananthapuram, Priyadarshan opined, “Every human being has the freedom to express their opinions but one make sure they express it in a dignified manner.”

Talking about Malayalam movie remakes in other languages, the director said that the difference in cultures is the major reason why remakes flop in India. Wherever movies are remade, the audience should be able to feel and reflect on them as their own, he added.

Referring to the remake of ‘Manichitrathazhu’ in Bollywood, he noted, “Akshay Kumar can never be Mohanlal. Original (movie) will always remain the original.”

When asked about whether new experimentations coming up in Hollywood are better than realistic cinema, Priyadarshan said that he always prefers to tell small stories which touch the viewers’ hearts.

The session was attended by numerous celebrities, including actor Siddique, director Sathyan Anthikad, and writers Subhash Chandran, Sreekanth Kottakkal among others.
