Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala’s 120 years long rich heritage in health care

Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala which was established by Vaidya Ratnam PS Varier in 1902 had a major role in the renaissance of Ayurveda and the global recognition of Ayurveda in the 20th century.

The institute, which has been dedicated to the use and promotion of Ayurveda for over a century, has evolved into a multi-faceted therapeutic Centre. The fact that this healthcare Centre provides relief to more than eight lakh patients every year reflects the magnitude of the organization's goals.

Arya Vaidya Sala has three pharmaceutical factories at Kottayam, Kanchikode and Nanjangud in Karnataka. Here, around 550 various forms of medicines are produced. Arishtam, arkkam, kashayam, kritham, thailam, tablet, bhasmam, choornam, and lehyam are produced in an effective manner. In addition, syrups, granules, tablets, capsules, balms, and gels are produced in various formats. Soaps, shampoos, hand washes, and sanitisers are all part of the process. Modern industrial methods and technologies are used to create drugs. Over 1800 approved dealers and 26 branches in India and overseas sell these pharmaceuticals to the general population.

For the production of medicines, Arya vaidya sala has a stockpile of over 600 drugs. It has large herbal gardens too. The resources for making the drug are provided by experienced agencies, tribal communities, government and semi-government entities, and private persons.

Arya Vaidya Sala consists of four hospital complexes. It has NABH-accredited Ayurvedic Hospitals and Research Centers in Kottayam and Delhi, as well as an Ayurvedic Hospital and Research Center in Kochi, which provides correct and authentic Panchakarma in Kerala treatments. Patients at the Charitable Hospital in Kottayam are provided with free accommodation, treatment, medicine, and food. Allopathic treatment is also provided here. Many patients from India and outside seek treatment at these institutes.

In addition to pharmaceuticals, therapies and charities, the Arya Vaidya Sala conducts research and studies in the field of herbs, therapeutics, pharmaceuticals manufacturing, and the science of Ayurveda. Arya Vaidya Sala has an AYUSH Accredited Quality Control Laboratory. DST, CSIR, CCRAS. Research on various topics is being done in collaboration with various institutes of the Government of India. There is a publishing house for scientific books, reports and the quarterly medical journal 'Aryavaidyan'. Arya Vaidya Sala also contributes financially to the Vaidyaratnam PS Varier Ayurveda College's operations.

In September 2003, President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam inaugurated the Centre for Medicinal Plants Research (CMPR). The research is being done in the field of chemical composition, internal structure, classification and tissue culture of herbs.

Apart from this Arya Vaidya Sala is also operating the famous PSV Natya Sangham for promoting Kathakali, an art form in Kerala.

The operation of the Arya Vaidya is carried out under the control and guidance of a seven-member trust board.
