Kozhikode: All five instruments of the Panchavadyam were there, yet one Maddalam remained silent, waiting for someone to beat it in rhythm.A team of Panchavadyam artistes from Amritha Higher Secondary School in Parippally, Kollam were in dismay after a tragedy set foot in one of their team members' lives.
Sadayasree, a Class 9 student of the school was supposed to play Maddalam in the team at the Kerala Kalolsavam. But unfortunately, she was forced to skip the performance due to the sudden demise of her father. Her father Suresh (48), who had been suffering from cancer, breathed his last a few minutes before the team was about to leave for Kozhikode. Following this, the Maddalam artiste had to stay back with her family.
As the registration process was already completed, replacing Sadayasree with another participant would violate the festival rules. However, the team’s Guru Radhakrishna Marar told his students, “Although Sadayasree is not here, her presence will be felt on the stage.”
The students placed the Maddalam on a chair and performed confidently.
The incident was a new experience for the judges too. However, due to the absence of a student to play Maddalam, the judges only awarded a B grade to the team.
