Kozhikode: As the 61st Kerala State School Kalolsavam came to a close on Saturday, students of JFKM VHSS, Ayanivelikulangara in Kollam, who were disqualified at the sub-district level in Vanchipattu, are leaving Kozhikode with a smile after securing A grade.

“At the sub-district level, our item was disqualified saying the Kuttanadan style of Vanchippattu is not one of the styles in the art form. We then had to go to the High Court to get qualified for the district competition. At the district level, we secured the first position,” said one of the students in the Vanchipattu team from JFKM VHSS.

One of their teachers, Nithin, said that they were given no grade at the sub-district competition and that the judges disqualified them saying there was no Kuttanadan style in Vanchipattu.

Sreedevi, another teacher, said that the JFKM VHSS has been participating in the Vanchipattu competition since 2018-2019.

The Aranmula style of Vanchipattu is based on devotion and is slower, whereas the Kuttanadan style is all about energy and is fast-paced. The props for both styles are different too. While Aranmula style uses props including a ‘para’ and coconut flower, the Kuttanadan style uses ‘olakka’.

“The Kuttanadan style of Vanchipattu is sung during the boat race and is about the competition and the energy. But the Aranmula style is about devotion while welcoming the Lord’s Thiruvonathoni (Thiruvona boat),” said Pradeep Kumar, a parent of one of the Vanchipattu participants from Kidangannur in Aranmula.
