Youth injured in road accident continues unconscious in ICU
Ambalapuzha: Every time the door of the Trauma ICU opens, Rahul’s mother hopefully runs to the door, just to see her son at least some time.
Rahul Vijay (25) was severely injured after his tempo van rammed on a wall near the roadside here on Saturday early morning. Unfortunately, none of the passersby helped him and he was left unattended and in pain for hours in the heavy rain. Finally, a kindhearted person came to his rescue. Mathrubhumi sub-editor G Venugopal who witnessed the incident also joined the person to help the injured.
Rahul is still in critical condition. As he had lost his father during his childhood, his mother Rajalakshmi who is a nursery teacher in a private school in Mannar raised him alone. They both live in a rented house in Mannar.
He was engaged in many small jobs to help his mother to make both ends meet. He was a paperboy for many years. Two years back he got a job in a courier servicing company. Following this, he bought a new tempo van last month. The freaking accident occurred when he was going to Haripad to collect the couriers.
Rahul was completely stuck inside the vehicle after it met with the accident. The person who came forward to help him and Venugopal could not pull him out. Though they approached nearby houses, none of them came out. Some of them even turned off the lights. None of the vehicles that passed by stopped even after seeing the accident.
As there was no response from the police, they contacted the fire force. Meanwhile, a few fish vendors and auto drivers came to help. But none of them could take him out. Finally, the fire force unit from Mavelikkara arrived along with an ambulance. They managed to cut the vehicle and rescue Rahul.
Rahul was first taken to Haripad taluk hospital and then to Alappuzha medical college. His hands and leg were fractured. He also suffered internal injuries in the abdomen.
