Yachts with helipad, the latest example of Kannur’s ‘uru’ making prowess
Azhikode: Two luxury yachts with helipads are under construction here in Kannur. The yachts are 200 feet long, 36 feet wide and 31 feet tall. The yachts will have four floors with the helipad on top. The luxury vessels are being built for two Qatari sheiks who are brothers.
The yachts will have two completely air conditioned luxury rooms at the bottom, a guest room on the first floor, owner’s cabin and control room on the third floor. The yachts will be powered by imported boat engines that produce 2,000 HP of power.
The two yachts are being built at Sulkha Shipyard, owned by Dr. Abdul Hakkim at a cost of Rs 20 crore for the past 4 years. A native of Thalankara, Abdul Hakkim has been involved in uru construction for the last 30 years.
Teak wood is used for construction. 100 expert carpenters from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are working on the yachts while a set of expert carpenters from Kannur are overseeing the whole project.
Abdul Hakkim, who completed graduation in Marine Engineering from the USA, himself designed the yachts. His wife Raseena and their son Suhair, who is an engineer, are also helping Abdul Hakkim in the projects. 58-year-old Abdul Hakkim is the son of uru trader and Kasaragod Thalangara native Abdullakkunji and wife Aamina.
In 2019, a 70-feet long luxury boat built by Abdul Hakkim was displayed on the Dubai boat show.
