Women power to the fore: 230 wells being dug by women in Palakkad
Pattambi: Long gone are the days when digging wells was considered as men’s job. As many as 230 wells are being constructed by women in Muduthala in Palakkad.
This group of women proved their excellence where water was first spotted in a well dug at Chakki Cheriyakuttan’s house in Ward 12 here.
With this, it is expected that a solution for drought in summer season will be found. The construction is being done under National Rural Employment Scheme.
In Muduthala, there are many houses without well. The villegers used to travel kilometers to collect water even during rainy season. The panchayat is aiming at a solution for this along with ensuring the women here of job for a long period.
The wells are constructed in the traditional method.
Even though the panchayat is situation the banks of Bharathappuzha, it had faced severe drought conditions the previous summer.
At present the Trithala Velliayankkallu check dam is full. This will help in raising the water level in here.
