Woman lights mother's pyre with quarantined brother looking on
Mullassery (Thrissur): Due to the COVID restrictions, a woman lighted the pyre of her mother while her brother, who just returned from abroad, had to stay away wearing PPE kit. Though he burst into tears on seeing his mother's body, nobody could go to him and console him. As the son was not allowed to perform the last rites as per COVID protocol, the daughter performed the rituals.
Usha aka Uma (70), wife of Thrissur Panakkal native Rajan, passed away and the body was cremated on the compound of their residence in Mullassery. Her daughter Dr Amritha lighted the pyre. Usha's son Shyam was abroad and returned home only three days ago knowing about the news of death. He is still in quarantine.
Amritha visited home from Gujarat when their mother fell ill. However, her mother breathed her last while Amritha was in quarantine. Usha's body had to be kept in mortuary for three days until the daughter completed her quarantine period, so that she can perform the rituals.
