Kochi: Lying on the recliner, this elderly woman keeps swiping on her smart phone screen when most of her contemporaries would apply slaked lime on their betel leaves. In between, she cracks jokes which are countered by her grandson.
88-year-old Mary, who has over 7.5 lakh followers and 1.30 crore likes on TikTok, is in search of a new app.
Video-sharing application TikTok was a rage for people in India and its ban - along with 58 other Chinese apps has impacted many people like Mary who were part of it every day, every minute.
Even during the COVID pandemic, Paravoor Pooyappilly native Mary Joseph and grandson Jinson were busy creating videos.
“We started TikTok videos feraturing grandmother who wears Chatta - mundu, the traditional Christian costume at home, just for fun during the floods. However, within 1.5 years we have created over 250 videos,” said Jinson.
“She had said no to funny videos during lockdown, so we created COVID awareness videos. The last video ‘Kakka’ had more than 10 lakh views,” he added.
Though she can’t create new videos with a ban on TikTok, she asks “isn’t for the country.”
