Winning elephant race again, Gopikannan proves to be truly ‘Lucky’
Guruvayur: Tusker Gopikannan, who won the famous Guruvayur elephant race on Friday, had won the race for the eighth time and proved his old name to be meaningful. When the tusker was brought to Kerala from Assam, its name was ‘Lucky Prasad’.
Gopikannan has second the highest number of victories in Guruvayur elephant race after tusker Ramankutty. With the latest victory in the Guruvayur elephant race, Gopikannan has won it eight times in a total whereas Ramankutty became champion 13 times. Tusker Kannan also has equal number of victories in his credit as Gopikannan.
Gopikannan is 45 years old. He is calm and quiet and is easily scared by the sound of crackers. The mahout moves him out of the temple premises before fireworks start after procession. After winning the race, Gopikannan was warmly welcomed by the temple authorities. It was Gopu Nandilath who dedicated tusker Gopikannan to Guruvayur temple.
