Vilangara temple turns mini Palani for Keralites to perform tonsuring ritual
Kollam: As COVID-19 cases continue to restrict devotees from visiting Palani temple, Vilangara Thrikkuzhiyoor temple has become another temple for tonsuring. Now, devotees rush to this temple considering it as Kerala’s Palani temple for tonsuring.
Tonsuring is a major offering practised by Lord Muruga devotees. Especially, many Hindu believers take kids to Palani temple to tonsure them for the first time. But due to the COVID-19, many parents were unable to take a trip to Palani temple with the little children.
Tonsuring ritual is rarely performed in temples in Kerala. Hence, the devotees started to visit Vilangara temple to complete the ritual of tonsuring. Adults and children fast prior to tonsuring.
COVID-19 protocol is strictly followed in Vilangara temple while performing the ritual. At present, the temple holds permission only for tonsuring of children.
After tonsuring, sandal paste is applied on the head. Later, the parents take the children to pray to the Lord. Though there are no 1001 steps like Palani temple, devotees have to ascend 86 steps to reach Vilangara Muruga temple.
