Two years since trains stopped at halt stations
Koyilandy: Ever since the passenger trains started running as express trains, many are not stopping at halt stations including Chemancheri. Due to this issue, these stations have now become inefficient to use. Many of them are covered with creepers.
It has been two years since trains stopped at railway halt stations like Vellayil, Iringal, Nadapuram road or Mukkali. Halt stations are those where private individuals sell tickets on the basis of commission. The restrictions imposed due to the Covid-19 pandemic jeopardized the condition of these stations.
The passenger trains that used to stop at this station were Kannur - Coimbatore (No 56650, 56651), Mangalapuram - Coimbatore (56323, 56324), Thrissur - Kannur (56602, 56603) and Kozhikode- Kannur (56652, 56653).
Many passengers including students, government employees, salespeople, workers from different firms normally use these stations for their daily commute. Passengers who go to Kozhikode Civil station usually get down at Vellayil station and resume their journey.
The trains started stopping at stations including Chemancheri due to massive protests. The people demanded that trains should stop at halt stations like the pre-pandemic period.
Chemancheri railway station is a historical spot commemorating the Quit India Movement.
