Two-storey building collapses; Rajeesh, family escape death by a hair’s breadth
Thalassery: They came outside the house in haste. Then, it didn’t take even one minute for the two-storey house to collapse. Rajeesh of Mambally house at Temple Gate here along with wife and two children escaped death miraculously, by a hair’s breadth.
The incident happened at around 10 am on Monday. Rajeesh was inside the house, reciting Ramayana. A train passed by through the 50 m far away railway track. Meanwhile, he heard a loud noise from behind the house. When he went and inspected, a crack was found on the rear wall. On the previous day, a portion of white washed walls at another part of the house had peeled off and fell.
When the crack was found, Rajeesh got suspicious and scared. He called his wife Preetha who was having breakfast, children Raga and Rigved and rushed outside. Meanwhile, his friends C Vijayan, B Preman and P C Valsan had arrived to visit Rajeesh.
Even a full minute had not passed by after the family came out of the house, the building collapsed before their eyes with thundering sound.
The portion of the kitchen and a small portion of the veranda adjacent to it were left. House appliances and furniture were completely destroyed. Earlier, in heavy rains, water had reached up to the outdoor steps of the house.
Rajeesh and family have shifted to sister’s house in Kommalvayal. The collapsed house made of laterite bricks, wood and roof tile was 90 years old.
