Muvattupuzha: A tusker brought to pull logs went berserk and attacked its mahout here on Thursday. The tusker was later subdued by firing tranquilizer shots.
The tusker Unnikrishnan went berserk on the land belonging to Muvattupuzha Nirmala College.
The tusker brought down Chalakudy Vattaparayil Sanjesh (39), the first mahout, who was sitting on top of the elephant. Sanjesh, who sustained injuries on his head and back, is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Muvattupuzha.
The elephant was standing in a compound that had no facilities to bring it under control without firing tranquilizer shots.
A tranquilizer team led by Dr Abraham Tharakan arrived from Ernakulam by 10. 30 am. Elephant workers' Union state secretary Manoj Ayyappan also reached the place. The tranquilizer shot was fired around 11 am and the tusker was subdued soon.
The tusker Unnikrishnan was brought to the place two weeks back to pull logs. The tusker had pulled logs on Wednesday also.
The problems started when it was made to pull a huge mango trunk which was more than 100 inches long. Unnikrishnan became angry after pulling the log. As the mahout Sanjesh forced it to pull the log, it caught hold of Sanjesh and brought him down.
Experts said that the elephant is not capable of pulling such big logs as it is only 22- years- old.
Moreover, only a big elephant who has much experience in the wood industry, can pull such big logs. The log was located in a deep place. It required hard work to pull it to the top. All these factors might have irritated the tusker.
The college authorities had sold the wood in their land. Those who brought the wood, had brought the elephant to pull the log.
