Nilambur: A troop of monkeys destroyed beehive boxes worth Rs 1.5 lakh near here. The beekeeper has filed a complaint with the forest department demanding compensation.
Bhaskaran, a native of Chemmad had installed 120 beehive boxes in PeeVees Estate in Chaliyar panchayat with the help of Kerala Horticorp one-and-a-half years back. Each beehive box had cost him Rs 2,000. Of this amount, Rs 750 was subsidy while the remaining Rs 1250 and Rs 250 per box for other costs was spent from Bhaskaran’s pocket.
Out of 120 beehive boxes, 55 were destroyed by the troop of monkeys. The estimated loss amounts to Rs 1.5 lakh. Bhaskaran has filed a complaint with the forest department demanding compensation. “Luckily for me, honey harvest for the season was almost over. Otherwise, the loss would have been much greater,” said Bhaskaran.
With the onset of monsoon, troops of monkeys have been appearing at different places of Chaliyar panchayat causing damages on a regular basis. Troops of monkeys destroy beehive boxes during the day. They also pluck coconuts and eat other crops. The monkeys also barge into houses by removing roof tiles before eating up food items kept inside.
