Today is Sree Krishna Jayanthi: No ‘Shobha Yatra’ this year, little Krishnas to appear online
Kanhangad: Considering Covid situation, there will be no ‘Shobha Yatra’ this time too. Balagokulam and temple committees had already decided not to hold ‘Shobha Yatra’ this year due to the Covid restrictions. However, several online competitions related to Ashtami Rohini are oragnised.
Thousands of photos showing kids dressed up as Lord Krishna and his female friends (Gopikas) are being sent in for the competition. Balagokulam, temple committees, local clubs, family groups and other associations are holding competitions of this sort at local body level.
Singing competition, drawing competition based on Sree Krishna’s history, and quizzes are also conducted as a part of the online program. The winners are given prizes.
Since ‘Shobha Yatra’ was cancelled the last two years, the costume designers are in deep distress. Before the pandemic, the days before Ashtami Rohini would be bustling with people hurrying to buy costumes for their kids.
Devan Babu and Devan Sreekanth of Nileshwaram Devan Arts said that they used to rent out almost more than 250 costumes of Krishna and Gopika. They stitch the costumes, but many others bring ready-made costumes from places like Mumbai and sell them here.
Costumes of Siva-Parvathi, Mahavishnu, Mahalakshmi, Lord Brahma, Saraswati, Sree Rama, Hanuman and other gods and goddesses are also sold on Sree Krishna Jayanthi. They are hoping for things to be back to normal by next year so that they can get back on track.
